There are many influences discernable in the music of Coup de Grass: American
Folk and Country can be heard, especially in Keith's beautiful ballads. There
is an undeniable Blues element to James's harmonica playing. The infectious rhythms
of Rock n Roll, Swing and Jazz are ever present. Some of the band's fast instrumentals,
together with their anarchic humour, have even invited comparisons with Spike
Jones and his City Slickers. With Keith Pearson's world-class songs as the mainstay
of their repertoire and James Darby's world-championship harmonica playing providing
most of the instrumental melody lines, musicianship alone would make them special,
but they are also a great looking and very funny act. Coup de Grass are regular
favourites at Broadstairs Folk Week, the Cambridge Folk Festival, Marlborough
Jazz Festival, Hitchin Folk Club and the Green Note in London's Camden Town. They
recently put in a ten day appearance at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in
New South Wales, Australia. The diversity of these venues and the wide range of
music they embrace is proof of this band's universal appeal.
